Road Trip Wednesday: Rated “Scare The Crap Out of You”

Road Trip Wednesday is a ‘Blog Carnival,’ where YA Highway’s contributors post a weekly writing- or reading-related question. This Week’s Topic: HAPPY HALLOWEEN! What’s your favorite scary book or movie?

As a Halloween junkie, this is so hard. It’s like being asked to pick your favorite child. Actually, it’s harder because it’s my belief that parents really have no problem picking their favorite kid, they just don’t want to admit it. 🙂

For my scary favorite book, I have to go with Shirley Jackson’s THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE. I’m a sucker for ghost stories set in houses and Jackson’s written one of the 20th Century’s best, a terrorizing story of tragic death, supernatural-tinged happenings and madness that skillfully builds to a nail-bitingly awesome conclusion.

Keeping with the haunted house theme, my favorite scary movie is “Poltergeist.” Your home is supposed to be a place of peace and refuge. What happens when it seemingly turns against you, even going so far as to abduct a member of your family? This movie starts off as an idyllic suburban slice-of-life flick but quickly transitions into the stuff of nightmares. Seriously. I’ve seen it dozens of times and it always terrifies me. And the fact that real-life tragedy has plagued “Poltergeist” and its sequels doesn’t help matters any.

What books or movies scare you silly?

    1. I just can’t find fault with it. I agree the second one definitely amped the creep factor, but that third one was all over the place. I wasn’t sure what story they were trying to tell.
